When the show was broadcast Kyle's speech about how terrorism works (because people give into it out of fear) and various utterances of the name Mohammed were bleeped. In that same episode (and the one before it) they did everything they could using nearly every other religious icon from around the world (like Jesus Christ, Buddha, Moses, etc) and there was no censorship or complaints (despite moments like Buddha doing lines of coke in the 200th episode). The entire episode used Mohammed in the least offensive way they could (he's literally following people around saying nothing), where everyone is panicking for no reason because someone might see what Mohammed looks like, all while having his likeness censored. So South Park decided to do another episode, but dealing with the bullshit censorship issues. Then 9/11 happened, years later there were protests and death threats towards a Dutch Danish artist that made an political cartoon with Mohammed and suddenly South Park was forbidden from showing Mohammed at all. The drawing was simply a catalyst in a necessary process."ĮDIT: Reading below, it seemed there was a bit more drama than I portrayed.ġ0 years before this episode (in July 2001) they showed Mohammed in the episode "Super Best Friends", and no one batted an eye or complained. And I know with absolute certainty that had it not been for that drawing then it would have been some book, play or movie. It shows the tension-filled relationship between Islam and terrorism. Kurt also remained steadfast in his belief in freedom of speech and does not regret his cartoon. It seemed a lot of the angry people also believed that Denmark was a city in Canada or something.

We saw muslims burning Danish flags on TV for a few weeks and someone tried and failed to sneak into Kurt's house with a knife (who was sentenced to 10 years) which was all the drama we really saw. Some additional details: The cartoonist name was Kurt Westergaard, now 79 years old, he drew mohammed with a bomb in his turban. I feel like a lotta religious is pretty messed up when you really go through whatever books they read, but your mental gymnastics must be on point if you can overlook sexually forcing yourself on kids. If you willingly go along with the ramblings of a kiddy rapist, then you really don't have your head screwed on tight enough. They opened themselves up to questions and immediately closed up when I was just asking as nicely as I could about the grittier areas of Islam that I'm aware of.

I asked a few questions and finally asked about Mohammed "deflowering" a 9 year old (I was much more tactful and pc than this) and I thought they were going to lose their shit right there. I got to talk to two Muslims on a train who were cool up until they started kinda witnessing or whatever they call it. even moreso than any other religious sect in my opinion. I get that his murderer isn't representative of all Muslims, but they really are some deluded people. R/television's favorite shows of all time (2020 edition)
